"The reason we are here today is very simple, that is to reinforce the global appeal to the governments and the peoples of the world to act now to deal with this food crisis, this famine, in the Horn of Africa.
If we act together now, we as the world community can save hundreds of thousands and possibly millions of lives. If we fail to act now, then we are going to stand by and see hundreds of thousands of people die, mostly children.
This has been, I think, legitimately described as the children's famine.
It is also, an avoidable catastrophe if we act now. We in Australia are putting our shoulder to the wheel, we are now one of the world's top five funders of this operation and we stand ready to do more. The challenge we have now, is to act as an international community.
This food crisis, this famine in Africa, is a direct appeal from the children of Africa to the conscience of the world. It is no more complex than that.
And if this appeal does not move the hearts of the world, I do not know what does."
East Africa has been in a protracted famine crisis for the past decade, but recently the situation has rapidly declined, and it's time for Australians to reach out and help! Last month, the United Nations formally declared disaster throughout the region. In response, we are launching the SchoolAid East African Famine Appeal, in proud partnership with UNICEF!

Students have only a few days left to submit their applications for the NAB Schools First Student Award with applications closing at 5.00pm (AEST) this Friday, 27 May 2011.

The award gives students an opportunity to implement their own school-community partnership idea. There are five (5) awards up for grabs, with each award including $2,000 to help implement the school-community partnership idea, mentoring opportunities, support from the NAB Schools First team and an Apple iPad for the student.

*Students must have the support of a teacher and/or Principal before submitting an application.
*Up to two students can jointly submit an application.

"The Australian Centre for Child and Youth: Culture and Wellbeing, at UTS' Kuring-gai campus, is an innovative, interdisciplinary, 21st century centre integrating technology, research, teaching and practice in fields pertaining to the culture and wellbeing of children and youth. The Centre for Child and Youth: Culture and Wellbeing has a diverse and high profile Advisory Board, and a growing list of partners and collaborations. Experts, both field practitioners and academics from across all disciplines, are working with industry and a range of research friends on projects designed to have strong and sustainable practical outcomes. The Centre has staff with expertise in areas including: literacy; school education; indigenous education; children's literature and culture; healthy lifestyles for sports participation; children's health; curricula, including the National Curriculum; drugs and alcohol abuse; parenting practices; child and family law; play and playground spaces; adolescents' online/digital/mobile cultures.
SchoolAid is very grateful to Founding director Professor Rosemary Johnston, her staff, and the Dean of the Faculty of Education for their hospitality, and for providing our organisation with office space within the Australian Centre for Child and Youth. We talked about the affects of the floods and cyclone on Queensland schools, and came with the good news that SchoolAid's 'Floods Relief Appeal' has so far raised over $820,000 for kids in need. It was a chance to celebrate again about the collaboration between SchoolAid and the NSW and QLD DETs, and grab a photo with the cheque, which will be directed to support Queensland State Schools impacted by the floods. Amazing effort by Aussie schools! Well done!

Kids Helping Kids Awards 2011 Partner STAEDTLER launches their 4th annual 'World Kids Colouring Day'! Entitled, "Our earth - our universe" World Kids Colouring Day is a global event initiated by STAEDTLER, and in Australia, the World Kids Colouring Day supports Save the Children programs. Kids are again invited to participate in this colouring campaign and, at the same time, raise money to help disadvantaged children all around the nation.
Even better, you can now enter your 'World Kids Colouring Day' project into the 'STAEDTLER CREATIVE KIDS' category in the 2011 KIDS HELPING KIDS AWARDS! Check out all the details here.

PRIME MINISTER BACKS SCHOOLAID DISASTER APPEALS

PRIME MINISTER JULIA GILLARD IS ENCOURAGING ALL AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS TO JOIN TOGETHER THIS FRIDAY, 18 MARCH, AND THEREAFTER, TO ACKNOWLEDGE THOSE WHO HAVE DIED, ARE MISSING AND HAVE BEEN IMPACTED BY THE EARTHQUAKE IN CHRISTCHURCH, AND IN THE DEVASTATION WROUGHT BY THE EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI IN JAPAN. AUSSIE SCHOOLS ARE SET TO MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE BY PARTICIPATING IN SCHOOLAID'S APPEALS.
Endorsing the work of SchoolAid in Australian Schools, the Prime Minister said
"One of the important messages from these tragedies is that all of us can make a difference - whether by volunteering, making a donation or just remembering the victims and survivors in our hearts. I commend the work of SchoolAid in helping Australian school communities show their care and concern for their fellow students affected by the recent natural disasters.
We have all witnessed extraordinary destruction and loss over the last few months with the floods and cyclone in Australia, the devastating earthquake in neighbouring New Zealand last month and now the horrific earthquake and tsunami which hit Japan."

The New Zealand Government has chosen March 18 to hold National Memorial Service to honor victims of the Christchurch earthquake.
March 18 has also been declared a National Day of Mourning. Here in Australia, let's show our support for our neighbours in New Zealand Schools. We encourage all schools to hold one minute's silence at 10.51am AEDST (the time the quake hit Christchurch), lower your school flag to half mast and ask students to bring in a gold coin donation towards the Christchurch Quake Appeal. We are thinking of all the schools in the Christchurch area and surrounding region who have been affected by this tragedy. Aussie schools - please unite in a show of HOPE and SUPPORT!

Kids Helping Kids Awards Partner Microsoft Australia have just announced the winners of their 2010 Worldwide Innovative Teachers Awards, acknowledging and rewarding visionary teachers who have introduced innovative technologies into their classrooms.
SchoolAid has built a strong partnership with Microsoft through its Partners in Learning (PiL) Initiative. Partners in Learning helps schools and teachers to more effectively use technology to advance teaching and learning, provides leadership and change management to school leaders and works to strengthen the foundational skills students will take forward into every next stage of their lives.
Since its inception in 1993, Partners in Learning has furthered the interests of more than 177 million students and over 7 million teachers and policymakers in 112 countries, with a total worldwide investment of US $500 million.
In Australia, Microsoft have already reached over 121,000 students, teachers and leaders and will invest $15 million in cash and resources by 2013.

I was reminded of the outstanding gift these people are to their school communities and humbled by the selfless and thoughtful way they went about showing their students what contribution really means in such tangible ways. This work is repeated creatively and generously in schools the nation over yet the role is not one to be found on any duty statement. This "work" is not measured for reporting to parents or authorities, but this is the stuff of education (as opposed to schooling), it enriches all and contributes to a particular school culture and of course it makes a difference in the lives of the children involved. VIPs launch Indigenous Literacy Campaign

Kids at Drummoyne Public School were treated to storytime with award-winning children's author, Libby Hathorn, as VIPs and celebrities from all walks of Australian life joined together to address the crisis of Indigenous literacy.
Senator Ursula Stephens, Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector, Dr Jackie Huggins AM from the Telstra Foundation and ALNF Ambassador, Faustina 'Fuzzy' Agolley from Video Hits were joined by representatives from SchoolAid and ALNF to launch this important campaign.

In an Australian first, SchoolAid and Australian low fares airline JETSTAR have joined forces to collaborate on the inaugural KIDS HELPING KIDS AWARDS, established to recognise and reward schools-based philanthropy.
Jetstar General Manager Marketing and PR, David May said SchoolAid was a terrific way to align Jetstar's already established World Vision 'StarKids' program with SchoolAid's work to benefit children in the disadvantaged Asian communities they service.
"Jetstar is very proud to partner with SchoolAid in this unique Awards program, fostering positive change in school communities both here and abroad," Mr May said. A huge thank you to Drummoyne Public School for having us to visit yesterday. We had the pleasure of meeting their Principal, SRC Co-ordinator (and teacher) as well as 10 enthusiastic and passionate boys and girls from years 2 to 7.
Drummoyne Public School believes in building a firm values education amongst its students, and has participated in SchoolAid's Burma, China, Victorian Bushfires and Haiti Emergency Appeals.

SchoolAid helps Burmese kids back to school

Thank you to the many schools who have already supported our Burma Emergency Appeal, following the devastation of Cyclone Nargis. We have been amazed by your brilliant fundraising and heart-felt messages of hope.
Funds raised by Australian schools through the Appeal will be directed toward the purchase of specially designed school kits, containing exercise books, pens, pencils and other materials. These are necessary to allow education to restart in one of the hardest hit regions, the Eastern Irrawaddy Delta, where up to 100,000 children were severely affected by the cyclone. As well as raising funds for these kits, Australian schools can continue to send messages of condolence and solidarity.
While normal schooling is still a distant reality for many kids in Burma, establishing temporary schooling as quickly as possible will help these kids regain a sense of normalcy and cope with the tragedy they have experienced.
SchoolAid has formed a partnership with internationally respected development agency, Save the Children, and can guarantee that the school kits and messages, will reach the cyclone-affected children. Save the Children has been working in Burma for 13 years and responded on the ground with 500 staff, immediately after Cyclone Nargis struck. Save the Children is a lead organisation in rebuilding education in post disaster situations and will also ensure that the school kits are used by Burmese students.
